The Wildfire Season

by Andrew Pyper

Review by Stephen Clark

Miles McEwan is a fire fighter with a past. Tragic circumstance claimed one of his team and left him carrying the scars, both inside and out. On learning of his girlfriend’s pregnancy, Miles leaves to find a place where his torment can find a little piece. Five years pass until a lady with a child stand in a bar’s doorway but the thing is Miles knew who they were before they’d even opened the door.

A fire started by some pyro’s hand matches the scale of others all along the Californian coast and traps the town of Ross River. While Miles and his new team accept defeat, a hunting party gets the wrong side of a grizzly after shooting one of her cubs. Radio communication is cut but Miles presses on to help save them. What he doesn’t know is one of the hunting party is beyond help. Armed and dangerous with a death wish for all, the hunter has other things than bears to hunt.

'The Wildfire Season' was an enjoyable read. There’s a very subtle supernatural edge to it that kept me turning the pages and the sections from the Grizzly’s perspective were interesting. Worth a go if you see it on the shelf.
