Dead Sky, Black Sun
By Graham McNeill
Review by Joel Cain
Author of six novels for the Black Library, Graham McNeill also worked on many of the codexes for Games Workshop.
"Dead Sky, Black Sun", is an Ultramarine novel, with the other books in the series being "Nightbringer" and "Warriors of Ultramar," both by McNeil and edited by Marc Gascoigne. This is the third Uriel Ventris novel.
"Dead Sky, Black Sun," continues on with the story of Space Marine Captain Uriel Ventris, exiled from the Ultramarine chapter. Ventris ventures forth into the Eye of Terror and the worlds of chaos where dwell the perverted Chaos Space Marine Legions. There he hopes to find glory and regain a place amongst his brothers . . . or die trying.
In "Dead Sky, Black Sun", McNeill combines an unpredictable plot with stunning descriptions to create a vivid picture of the 40K universe and its denizens. The action was fast and at times furious and I didn't feel I was hindered too much by the fact I had not read the earlier books. Although I am not a 40,000 gamer, I enjoyed the novel and thought it was a great pulp read.
