End of the Line
by Rebecca Levene
Review by James R.Cain
'End of the Line' is a Final Destination novel, penned by Rebecca Levene, author of the Black Flame Strontium Dog title 'Bad Timing'.
The story follows a group of six International students studying in New York who survive the wreck of two subway trains. The group and their teacher, narrowly escaped death as one of their number, Danny, received a vision of the disaster and managed to coax and manhandle the group out of the train just before the collision.
And Death is not happy about this one little bit.
"You're on Death's list. . . . You broke Death's Design and Death will do anything to mend it." (End of the Line. Page 280)
It's a familiar theme to fans of the Final Destination movies, and rightly so. It's what we expect from such a chiller.
There's a second storyline in 'End of the Line' however. This follows a young doctor, Kate, who has a near death experience when a student dare goes horribly wrong. Kate comes back with a gift: she can foresee the deaths of people who are soon to die, she can see Death's design. Kate meets Danny and the other students following the subway crash and joins up with them to help them. I felt that this element, this gift of Kate's, added an extra dimension to the story.
In all, Levene was very true to the Final Destination formula. As someone who enjoyed the movies, I enjoyed the book, and there was an added twist at the end. If you enjoyed the movies, you will not be disappointed by 'End of the Line'.
