Wild Kingdoms
Writer: Robert Earl
Review by Erika Cain
Robert Earl is the author of the Warhammer novel "The Burning Shore". This book is his second novel.
"Wild Kingdoms" is a wonderful piece of fiction with powerful imagery. The story follows a young girl who goes missing from her merchant caravan, her would be rescuer Florin d’Artaud and his companion Lorenzo. Florin learns of the girl’s disappearance and sets out to rescue her, a task that involves journeying into the heart of the Ogre Lands. The ensuing fiasco is packed with tense battles, dangerous adventures, and some rather graphic, and occasionally somewhat offensive Ogre activities. And to add a lighter air into all this seriousness, a smattering of darkly amusing moments are provided for the reader. We also gain some insight into the true motivations of the Ogres. Could it be that they are simply misunderstood?
I must say that I thoroughly enjoyed this book. I finished it in a single day simply because I felt compelled to keep reading, although admittedly, I had a little problem eating meat for a few days afterwards.
Earl delves into the world of the Ogres with a descriptive authority that makes the reader wonder if perhaps he has actually been there. A truly good read, a must for Ogre fans.
