Cannibals

by Rex Bowman

Review by Natalie Cain

Residing in Roanoke, Virginia, Rex Bowman is a journalist for the Richard Times-Despatch by day, and a scriptwriter/novelist by night.  Cannibals is his debut novel with no other works on the horizon as yet.

Cannibals is the story of a school field trip gone wrong.  Six students and a teacher venture out on a yacht for the excursion of a lifetime only to end up stranded on an island inhabited by cannibals.  Six make it to the island, but how many make it off?  This is a tale of survival, friendship and escape.

I’d say this one was aimed at the pre-teen to teenage market, except for the graphic portrayal of cannibals burning and eating their victims alive would see youngsters being plagued with nightmares for weeks to come.  So instead, I’d suggest this one for is for young adults with a few hours to kill.  It’ll remind you of the friendships you had in school and how we shouldn’t always be so quick to judge a person's character on appearance only.  I personally was disappointed in the ending as I felt it was a tad too predictable, however it was a frightening journey and this book is certainly one for a scare.

The book itself was a quality production.  It's 222 pages and is a nice-looking paperback.
